Money Matters will help you build a simple and manageable financial system for your micro business from day one. Jenny is a plain-English business and money coach who takes the fear out of finance – and there is no difficult maths involved and this isn’t Dragons Den!
The session will explore whether your business is financially viable for your circumstances and show you how to record what you earn and spend in your business, manage your cash flow and prepare for tax and National Insurance. You will also learn how to keep digital records, separate business and personal finances, and build good financial habits that will support you throughout your self-employed career.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
- Understand the difference between cash and profit and why both matter.
- Set up a simple system for separating business money, tax savings and emergency funds.
- Record business income and expenditure accurately using a spreadsheet or simple accounting software.
- Think about and identify typical micro-provider business costs that you may need to factor in.
- Create a basic monthly cash-flow forecast to plan ahead and assess if this way of working is feasible for you.
- Understand the importance of setting money aside for tax and National Insurance and know what teh deadlines are likely to be.
- Recognise common financial mistakes.
- How to establish a regular weekly routine for updating records and reviewing cash flow.
- Build greater confidence in managing the financial side of self-employment rather than winging it!
