Our Onboarding Course gives new and potential micro providers a clear understanding of what is involved in working independently in care and support. It helps you build the foundations of a safe, professional and legally compliant business from the very beginning.

The course introduces many of the key areas covered by our Doing It Right Quality Standard, including self-employment, insurance, DBS checks, safeguarding, professional responsibilities and the rules around providing personal care. It is an important first step towards joining the Local Help My Way network with confidence.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the role of a micro provider and what self-employment involves.
  • Identify the benefits, responsibilities and financial considerations of working for themselves.
  • Understand the basic requirements for HMRC registration, tax, National Insurance, insurance and business records.
  • Comprehend the importance of DBS checks, safeguarding and safe professional practice.
  • Recognise key legal responsibilities, including the Care Act, CQC rules, data protection, equality and health and safety.
  • Understand when personal care may be provided without CQC registration and when registration may be required.
  • Describe the purpose and expectations of ourQuality Standard.
  • Identify the documents and evidence needed to build a professional micro-provider portfolio
  • Be clear about how to join the Local Help My Way directory and understand the 5 requirements.
